Joburg residents have a new way to report their billing and other municipal problems
and it happens at the click of a button
Mobilitate is an online platform that allows citizens across South Africa to register at no cost and to report municipal issues like streetlights and potholes by using Google Maps to pin-point the exact location of the issue.
Mobilitate sends the issue to the relevant municipality and at the same time notifies the ward councillor in question. All the communication and updates regarding the issue happens in ONE place visible for everybody to see.
To date 1145 issues have been reported in Johannesburg. 252 of these issues relate to the billing crisis the City has been experiencing for months.
The process of reporting a Joburg billing query was specifically developed for Joburg residents to report their old and new billing issues. When submitting their issues Joburgers can provide all the relevant info on a custom made template and upload required supporting documents. These documents can also be uploaded at a later stage.
“All these functionalities and requirements are based on many discussions we had with Joburg councillors who deal with billing issues on a daily basis,” says Mobilitate spokesperson Zelda Potgieter.

Mobilitate has also created infrastructure for all 4277 wards in the country enabling ward councillors, proportional councillors, ward committees and their constituents to participate effectively in the local political process. A link to all of the Johannesburg ward councillors here.
Infrastructure also exists for the 200+ municipalities in South Africa enabling citizens and municipalities to effectively and transparently manage service delivery issues. The Johannesburg municipal page is here.
Citizens can even report their issues on the go and on the spot by making use of the iPhone and Android mobile app.
And ratepayers and residents associations can now use it as a platform to communicate with members and organise and collaborate around issues of service delivery.
